Dragon’s Posterity Excerpt

By mid-morning Kyn and Serena had crossed the western mountains of the Carr. The sight that greeted their eyes took Kyn’s breath away. Spread out before them was a small strip of green land bordered by a vast expanse of sparkling blue, the likes of which Kyn had only seen in his dream. The inland sea was similar to it, but one could almost see the edges of the sea. This water had the feel of depth and vastness to it. The only edge was the line of white that met the gray of the sand.

“What is it, Kyn?” Serena asked, awed.

“I don’t know. I’ve never seen anything like it before, save in my dream.”

“Then we’re in the right place. Do we go up or down the coast?”

“If what I saw was a memory from Aislin, then I would assume we go south. The wild drakes lived further south than where we crossed the Carr.”

Serena turned Mertenia to their left, and they flew following the mountains. After a while they became aware of a constant droning. Kyn wondered at it, but didn’t say anything. It wasn’t until they stopped for the mid-day meal, that he realized what he had been hearing: it was the sound of waves crashing incessantly on the sandy beach.

They had just finished eating when Serena stated, “I can’t believe how wild water can be.”

“It reminds me of a certain young woman I knew, untamable and in control.” Serena eyed Kyn. “I didn’t think I was that bad.”

“Maybe not, but I don’t see anything being able to control that water. You wanted no one or nothing to control you but yourself.”

Serena gazed out at the water. “I was pretty bad, wasn’t I?”

Kyn reached over and drew her to his side. “But you’ve come around. You learned what trust is all about.”

“That and forgiveness. Actually, I find this water beautiful. I wouldn’t want to have it mad at me, but I can enjoy it from a distance.”

“Well, if we are to find the place in my dream, we had better enjoy the sea from the air.” Kyn chuckled.

Serena agreed, and they mounted their dragons.
